Performing Membership:

For £75 a year you are entitled to perform in our two productions a year (we do not ask for show fees on top of this) and to take part in our programme of varied social events.

Technical Membership:

For £15 a year you join our large team of backstage crew without whom the shows would not happen and of course join in our social events. If you are interested in costumes, lighting, stage crewing etc, this could be the one for you.

Honorary Membership:

For £15 a year you get to support the society without appearing on stage or forming part of our backstage crew. In return for your support we invite you to join our social events and will give you a free programme for both shows each year.

If you are interested in becoming a member of PWOS or would like to help out in any way please contact secretary@pwos.org.uk.

Rules and Constitution

RULES OF THE PETTS WOOD AND DISTRICT OPERATIC SOCIETY

1. No person other than a member of the Society shall be allowed in any hall at a rehearsal except by permission of the Producer or Musical Director.

2. No Performing Member once having accepted a part as a Principal in any production of the Society shall rehearse or take part in any other production during the course of the Society's rehearsals without first consulting the Producer.

3. Members of the Society shall, at their own expense, provide themselves with their own copies of the play, vocal score and libretto.

4. All Performing Members taking part in any production of the Society shall notify the Secretary or Producer of their inability to attend any rehearsal.

5. Non-attendance or unpunctuality at any rehearsal on the part of Performing Members shall, at the discretion of the General Committee, render such members liable to exclusion from the production then being rehearsed.

6. No member of the Society shall order an article in the name of the Society, or enter into any contract on its behalf without the authority of the General Committee.

7. Membership of the Society does not necessarily entitle such member to take part in any production of the Society, and the Committee shall have the right to ask any member to undergo an audition at any time, or to stand down from any production of the Society.

8. A voting paper for the election of Committee members shall not be invalid by reason only of the fact that the votes recorded on it total less than the number of members to be elected.

CONSTITUTION OF THE PETTS WOOD AND DISTRICT OPERATIC SOCIETY

1. Name - The name of the Society shall be "The Petts Wood and District Operatic Society".

2. Objects - The objects of the Society shall be the study and performance of opera and all kinds of operatic and theatrical works, with a view to enhancing the standard of amateur productions and providing the public with a high-class entertainment of a cultural or educational value.

3. Membership - There shall be three classes of membership:

(a) Performing Members

(b) Honorary Members. An Honorary Member shall not be eligible to take a performing role in any production of the Society but in all other respects shall have the same privileges as a Performing Member.

(c) Technical Members. Backstage and technical staff may become Technical Members. Their status shall be as Honorary Members.

Admission of members shall be entirely at the discretion of the General Committee. Applicants for Performing Membership shall, if required, satisfy the General Committee as to their ability. All members of the Society, whether Performing, Honorary or Technical Members, shall have power to vote at all Annual General Meetings and Extraordinary General Meetings of the Society.

4. President and Vice-Presidents - The Society may have a President and an unlimited number of Vice-Presidents, to be appointed by the General Committee.

5. Officers - The Officers of the Society shall be Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Hon. Members Secretary and Publicity Officer.

6. The General Committee - The management of the Society shall be vested in the General Committee, consisting of twelve people being the Officers of the Society and elected members. Providing that such Officers or elected members shall not have retired, or have been expelled in accordance with Article 7(d) hereof, they shall retain office with full powers until the Annual General Meeting, or other such meeting convened for the election of Officers or members to the General Committee, when all such Officers and elected members shall retire. The Chairman of the Society shall be the chairman of the General Committee. At meetings of the General Committee, five shall form a quorum and each member shall have one vote and, in the event of the voting on any resolution being equal, the Chairman shall, in addition to his own vote, have a second or casting vote. The General Committee shall meet as and when they consider it necessary and convenient, and shall be called by the Chairman or Secretary. In the event of the unavoidable absence of both these Officers, the General Committee shall meet by mutual agreement of the majority of the remaining members.

7. Powers of the General Committee - The General Committee shall have power to:

(a) Select all productions to be performed, and to arrange the entire programme of activities of the Society.

(b) Carry out the general management of the Society.

(c) Fill casual vacancies in their number by electing members of the Society to fill such vacancies.

(d) Terminate the membership of any member whose conduct is considered by the General Committee to be prejudicial to the interests of the Society, provided that any such member shall first have an opportunity of appearing before the General Committee, and his membership shall not be terminated unless two thirds of the members of the General Committee then present vote in favour of the termination of his membership.

(e) Form sub-committees with such power as the General Committee shall think fit.

(f) Appoint a Producer, a Musical Director and such officials as the General Committee may consider necessary and, if non-members of the Society pay for their services.

(g) Engage, with or without payment, the services of non-members, either amateur or professional, for any production or activity of the Society.

(h) Draw up such rules for the conduct of affairs of the Society, as they deem necessary.

(i) Carry out other such duties consistent with the objects of the Society as may be remitted to them from the members in Annual General Meeting or Extraordinary General Meeting.

8. The Casting Committee - The allotment of parts for any production shall be left to the decision of a Casting Committee consisting of five persons elected by the General Committee. The Casting Committee shall generally include the Producer and the Musical Director.

The Casting Committee shall elect its own chairman and, at its meetings, three shall form a quorum. In the event of the voting on any resolution being equal, the chairman shall have, in addition to his own vote, a second or casting vote.

9. Accounts and Audits - The financial transactions of the Society shall be recorded in a proper set of books, and such books shall be open to inspection by members at Annual General Meetings of the Society, and shall be audited each year by two auditors or a qualified accountant. In the event of there being a surplus of income over expenditure in any one year such surplus shall on no account be distributed amongst members, but shall be carried forward in the accounts for the following year.

The Society shall borrow and raise money for the purpose of the Society's objects by means of subscriptions, and any kind of social event, and monies received by the Society shall be applied in furthering all or any of the objects of the Society. No portion of these monies shall be paid to any member or co-opted member of the Society. The Society may make such donations, as the Committee may think fit to any Charity recognised as such by the Charity Commission of England and Wales.

10. Membership Subscriptions

(a) For Performing Members the subscription shall be of such sum as is from time to time decided by a General Meeting of the Society. The General Committee may at its discretion admit a limited number of Student Members on payment of one half of the full Performing Member's subscription. Subscriptions shall fall due on the 1st January each year. Members who fail to pay their subscription after at least one week's notice of non-payment may have their names removed from the roll of members. The General Committee shall have the power to reduce subscriptions.

(b) For Honorary Members and Technical Members the minimum subscription shall be decided by a General Meeting of the Society.

11. Annual General Meetings - One ordinary general meeting of the Society called the Annual General Meeting shall be held each year within the six months after the year-end. The meeting shall be called by the Secretary, in writing, and notices calling the meeting shall state the business to be transacted thereat.
